At the age of 56, Sinead OâConnor sadly passed away on July 26, 2023. The Irish singer, musician, and political activist rose to fame in 1990 for her song Nothing Compares 2 U, written and composed by Prince. Over the course of her career, Sinead, who changed her name to Shuhadaâ Sadaqat in 2018 after converting to Islam, released 10 studio albums.
Speaking of Sinead on Channel 4 News, Irish broadcaster and music journalist Dave Fanning said that the musician was âcompletely and absolutely one of a kind,â and âher own person.â A decade prior to Sineadâs untimely death, she wrote an âempoweringâ open letter to American singer Miley Cyrus.

In 2013, Sinead OâConnor wrote an open letter to Miley Cyrus.
The letter came after the Flowers singer said that the music video for her song, Wrecking Ball, was âinspiredâ by Sineadâs Nothing Compares 2 U video.
After multiple news outlets contacted Sinead for comment on Mileyâs comparison, she decided to write an open letter and publish it on her website, sineadoconnor.com, writes The Mirror.
Sineadâs letter to Miley goes viral
When Sinead wrote her open letter to Miley Cyrus, she was 46 years old and the The Climb singer was 20.
Following the tragic news of Sineadâs death in 2023, the open letter has gone viral online, 10 years after it was written.
Sineadâs letter to Miley began:
âDear Miley, I wasnât going to write this letter, but today Iâve been dodging phone calls from various newspapers who wished me to remark upon your having said in Rolling Stone your Wrecking Ball video was designed to be similar to the one for Nothing Compares ⌠So this is what I need to say ⌠And it is said in the spirit of motherliness and with love.â
The late singer-songwriter voiced her âconcernsâ over scenes in the Wrecking Ball music video and warned Miley of âexploitationâ in the music industry.
Sineadâs letter detailed the importance of female âempowerment.â She urged Miley to consider her impact as a ârole modelâ given that she is a âfemale in the industry.â
She wrote: âI would be encouraging you to send healthier messages to your peers ⌠that they and you are worth more than what is currently going on in your career.â
